Art 220 Day 2

Albert Einstein kicked off our discussion in class today. The ideas, concepts, and theories Einstein came up with all started as an apprehension about a belief. We also talked about what kind of person Einstein was. His gift of being a genius and dyslexic at the same time. What makes people think of these ideas? Why do we need them? Are these ideas relevant? Time was an idea at first, and someone thought to break down our days into 24 hour increments measuring our weeks, months, and years. Is this idea or concept useful to us? In my opinion, yes. I think that in our society we need regularity and guidelines to organize our already strenuous lives. Concepts in photographs was also a topic of discussion for us.
Provoking images were brought to our attention. All were completely different. How did we assume these images? How did they make us feel? Each picture was different from the last triggering different emotions and thoughts. Some people saw more in these pictures than others. Others dissected the pictures almost immediately understanding every aspect of the image. I think that the idea behind looking at these images was to understand how each individual feels about a picture. Similar to the apple, some people saw these images completely differently. I think some pictures might have meant more to person than the other. A perfect example would be the image of Christ. One person might see that very offensive where the next person just assumes it is as a joke. The picture of fallen soldiers being brought home might mean more to some than others. Bringing out our emotions and expressing them to each image is what makes us understand these pictures better. Being able to look from all aspects to completely and thoroughly understand an image is what makes us exceptional artists.

depict-to represent by or as if by painting; portray; delineate.
iconography-symbolic representation, esp. the conventional meanings attached to an image or images.
perception-the act or faculty of apprehending by means of the senses or of the mind; cognition; understanding.

  1. I agree opinions differ from person to person and what one finds funny, the other might find it offensive. Depicting a photo; image, analyzing it and coming up with something that makes sense to us, is just as different as a roll of a multi-sided dice.

  2. Unique Ideas are what make people excellent. Take for example Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo they both where really skilled at what they did yet again some of their ideas didn’t come hand in hand since they were constantly in competing. In other words, if all “artist” understand each other’s ideas there would be no such thing as an exceptional “artist”. The “artist” that tries to show a different perspective, unique, and authentic idea and doesn’t look for common understanding is what makes an exceptional artist. Yet again, what is an artist? Do we all believe an artist is (your answer here_______________________). ?

  3. I agree with you about the whole concept of time and why it is useful for us. I think that everything starts with an idea that has a purpose to help our needs and the idea of time has helped us to organize our daily lives.

  4. Brett,
I'd like to ask If you would keep this blog online? It would be a helpful resource to future sections of Concept Development. At least thru the end of Spring, 2010.
    Thanks,
    Jimmy
